Ponyboy Curtis was a very good student until two of his friends died. Then he stopped doing all of his work, one day his teacher talked to him and told him he was failing English. The teacher told Ponyboy that he would pass him with a good C if he did an essay about one of his life experience.
At first Ponyboy didn't know what he was going to write about. He thinks about what to write about for awhile. Then he starts to write about the time he got out of a movie theater. When he is staring at himself in the mirror some socs drive by and call him a greaser. He keeps on walking then he notices that they follow him. They gang up on Ponyboy and pin him down to the grown. They pull a knife on him and cut him a little around the neck. Then some of Ponyboy's friends show up and chase the socs away.
The movie gets really interesting when Jonny kills one of the socs. Ponyboy and Jonny run away to Windrixville. There they stay at a church. Then one day when Dally one of Ponyboys friend goes to visit Ponyboy and Jonny the church starts on fire.
Some kids are tramped in the fire and Ponyboy and Jonny help them out. Right when Jonny was about to get out of the church a piece of wood falls on him and he breaks his back and gets a lot of injuries.
